Montessori Academy at Spring Valley

Upper El/Middle School

12-15 years

Our middle school students are seamlessly integrated into our upper elementary classroom, where they tackle more extensive projects and acquire essential skills preparing them for active participation in society.

Program overview

In the upper elementary classroom, we remain dedicated to nurturing students in alignment with their natural developmental stages. Children are encouraged to engage in collaborative group projects, assume leadership roles within their classroom community, and develop supportive communication skills.

Project-based curriculum

Classroom subjects are explored in an integrated manner, where students grapple with real-world issues while honing their skills in math, economics, science, humanities, language, and writing. The manipulative materials of the elementary are rarely used, as these students are now able to work, understand, and visualize ideas in the abstract. The focus is upon the development of a successful process and innovative approach, rather than rewarding an expected answer.

Spanish language classes

We believe in nurturing a global perspective through language. That's why we offer engaging Spanish classes that immerse students in the beauty of the language and its culture. Our dedicated instructors use interactive methods that align with Montessori principles, encouraging children to explore, communicate, and connect.  Through songs, stories, and hands-on activities, students not only learn Spanish but also develop a lifelong appreciation for diverse cultures.

Connection to nature

Located on 14 acres of wetlands, our students spend time in nature, exploring ecosystems and developing a connection to the environment. A highlight of our year is the annual salmon release, where children actively participate in this hands-on conservation project. This experience not only teaches the importance of biodiversity but also instills a sense of stewardship for our planet. Through these initiatives, we empower our students to become mindful caretakers of the earth.

Community

Beyond intellectual development, the Middle School program guides students to become active citizens and fully informed problem solvers within the local community and beyond.

Our alumni excel in school — and in life

Years of watching our students matriculate to high school, college, and beyond confirms that an authentic Montessori Middle School is an excellent education for life. Our graduates excel in school and careers of choice but, more importantly, emerge as confident, well-adjusted, happy adults.

“Currently, I study at Georgetown University in Washington DC…I feel that my education at Montessori Academy and the valuable skills it provided me with have played a big role in helping me to succeed.  The Montessori method of education taught me how to be an independent and self-motivated worker; these qualities have helped me through high school, college, and life in general.”

Sarah Lorch – 2002 MASV 8th Grade Graduate

“I am in love with this school…when we met the staff, I fell in love. They're friendly, caring, and they genuinely have an interest in each student. Every day that I pick up my daughter her teacher is always complimenting students on what they did well that day. I think it's important to build children up. Since my daughter has been enrolled, she's just made leaps and bounds. Great school.”

Alexa B. – Parent

“I was a student at Montessori Academy for kindergarten in 1960/61. I still have a wonderful memory of dancing with scarves that has stayed with me all these years, and other less specific memories of enjoying the school day…I feel that I was very fortunate to start my schooling at Montessori Academy.”

Margaret S. – Former Student
